Casares sits on a ridge twenty minutes above the coast, a stack of white houses around a Moorish castle. From there the road carries on to Gaucín and Manilva, and together they make the gentlest day out on the Costa del Sol.
The road
These are narrow, twisting country roads with little traffic and no hurry. They suit a car with soft suspension and big windows, which is why we send the Cullinan. Everyone in the back gets the view.
Where to stop
- Casares, park below the village and walk up to the castle
- Gaucín, for lunch on a terrace looking over the valley to Africa on a clear day
- The cork oak forest between the two, for a short walk in the shade
Coming back
Come down through Manilva for the vineyards and the last of the light over the sea, then along the coast road home.
